NYC and New York paycheck questions

Do I pay NYC income tax if I live in New Jersey or Long Island and work in Manhattan?

No. New York City income tax applies only to residents of the five boroughs. A commuter who lives outside the city does not owe it, though they still owe New York State tax on wages earned in New York. The one exception is city government employees, who file Form NYC-1127.

Do I file a separate New York City tax return?

No. New York State collects the city tax for the city. Residents report it on Form IT-201, the state resident return, and the city tax withheld from your pay is credited on that same return. There is no separate city form to file or city portal to log in to.

I live in NYC but my job is in another state. Is NYC tax still withheld?

It should be if your employer has to withhold New York taxes. Employers withhold for city residents even when the work is done outside the city. An out-of-state employer with no New York office or business does not have to withhold, so you may need to make estimated payments yourself.

I moved out of New York City this year. Do I owe city tax for the whole year?

No. You owe city tax only for the part of the year you lived in the city. Complete Form IT-360.1, Change of City Resident Status, and submit it with your New York State return (Form IT-201 or IT-203).

What is the NYC income tax rate?

For the 2025 tax year (the latest published schedule) New York City taxes residents at 3.078% to 3.876% of NYC taxable income, which is the same as New York State taxable income. A single filer reaches the top 3.876% rate above $50,000; a married couple filing jointly above $90,000.

How much NYC tax comes out of a $100,000 salary?

About $143.20 every two weeks, or $3,723 a year, for a single filer with a 2026 Form IT-2104 and no deductions, using the state's NYC withholding tables.

How much is the NYC minimum wage after taxes?

At $17.00 an hour, 40 hours a week, a single filer takes home about $1,079.15 every two weeks ($28,058 a year) after federal, New York State and NYC tax, Social Security, Medicare and the state's disability and paid family leave deductions.

How much New York income tax comes out of my paycheck?

New York State uses graduated withholding tables after subtracting a deduction and your IT-2104 allowances. New York City and Yonkers residents also pay city tax. Show the math lists every step.

Why does the calculator ask about Form IT-2104?

Your employer withholds New York tax based on the Form IT-2104 you filled in, which is separate from your federal Form W-4. If you never filled one in, employers usually withhold as single with no allowances.

Do I pay New York City tax if I work in NYC but live elsewhere?

No. New York City income tax is withheld only from NYC residents. Pick where you live in the calculator.

What is the NY disability (DBL) deduction?

Employers may take 0.5% of wages, but no more than $0.60 a week, toward New York's disability benefits.

What is the NY Paid Family Leave deduction?

A premium for New York's paid family leave program: 0.432% of gross wages, up to $411.91 a year in 2026.

Why is my first paycheck in January different?

New federal withholding tables and a new Social Security cap start on January 1. Pick a 2027 pay date in the calculator to see the change.

Why did my paycheck get bigger late in the year?

Social Security stops once your pay for the year reaches $184,500. Enter your pay so far this year to see when that happens.

How much is $70,000 a year after taxes in New York City?

About $52,078.00 a year, or $2,003.00 every two weeks, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions in 2026. That is after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, New York State and NYC tax, NY disability insurance (DBL) and NY Paid Family Leave. Use the calculator for your own filing status and deductions.
