Texas paycheck questions
Does Texas take state income tax out of my paycheck?
No. Texas does not tax wages, so the only taxes withheld are federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare.
How long does my employer have to give me my last paycheck in Texas?
If you were fired or laid off, your employer must pay you in full within six calendar days. If you quit, resigned or retired, your final pay is due on the next regularly scheduled payday.

What is the deadline to file a wage claim with the Texas Workforce Commission?
You must file a Payday Wage Claim with TWC within 180 days of the date the wages were due. Separately, you have two years from the date the wages were due to file a lawsuit in court.
Can my Texas employer take money out of my paycheck without asking?
Only for deductions required by law or ordered by a court. For anything else, such as uniforms, shortages or loans, your employer needs your written authorization, and the deduction must be for a lawful purpose.
Can my employer make me take my pay on a payroll card in Texas?
An employer can choose to pay by payroll card, but must give you written notice, a full list of card fees, and a form to request another payment method. After you ask, you must be switched as soon as practicable.
Why is my first paycheck in January different?
New federal withholding tables and a new Social Security cap start on January 1. Pick a 2027 pay date in the calculator to see the change.
