    Maine paycheck questions

How much Maine income tax comes out of my paycheck?

Maine subtracts $5,300 per W-4ME allowance and a standard deduction (smaller at high pay), applies 5.8% to 7.15%, and rounds each paycheck to the dollar. Show the math lists every step.

Why does the calculator ask about Form W-4ME?

Your employer withholds Maine tax based on the Form W-4ME you filled in, which is separate from your federal Form W-4. If you never filled one in, employers usually withhold as single with no allowances.

What is the Maine paid leave deduction?

Maine paid family and medical leave. Employers may take up to 0.5% of wages, up to the Social Security wage base. Some pay it themselves; tick the box if yours does.

What will Maine's minimum wage be in 2027?

Maine's minimum wage rises from $15.10 to $15.70 an hour on January 1, 2027. The cash wage for tipped service employees rises to $7.85 an hour. Workers in Portland, Bangor or other towns with local ordinances may be owed more.

How much is taken out of my Maine paycheck for paid family leave?

The premium is 1% of wages at employers with 15 or more Maine employees, and your employer may deduct up to half of it, or 0.5% of your pay. Smaller employers pay 0.5% and may deduct all or part of it from your wages.

When do I get my final paycheck in Maine?

When you leave a job in Maine for any reason, you must be paid in full no later than your next regular payday. If you demand payment, the deadline is the next payday or two weeks after your demand, whichever comes first.

Can my Maine employer deduct a cash register shortage from my pay?

No. Maine law does not let employers make you repay cash shortages, inventory shortages, dishonored checks or damage to the employer's property. You can agree in writing to a payroll deduction for uniform cleaning, but it cannot be required.

How often must I be paid in Maine?

Maine employers must pay you in full at regular intervals of no more than 16 days, and each payment must include all wages earned to within 8 days of the payment date.

Why is my first paycheck in January different?

New federal withholding tables and a new Social Security cap start on January 1. Pick a 2027 pay date in the calculator to see the change.

Why did my paycheck get bigger late in the year?

Social Security stops once your pay for the year reaches $184,500. Enter your pay so far this year to see when that happens.

How much is $70,000 a year after taxes in Maine?

About $54,475.20 a year, or $2,095.20 every two weeks, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions in 2026. That is after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Maine income tax and Maine Paid Family & Medical Leave. Use the calculator for your own filing status and deductions.

What is the average salary in Maine?

The median (typical) worker in Maine earns $24.73 an hour, about $51,440 a year full time, and the mean (average) is $31.63 an hour, about $65,790 a year (BLS, May 2025). The median is lower because a few high earners pull the average up. At the median, take-home pay is about $1,587.65 every two weeks for a single filer.
