How we verify our numbers

Most withholding agencies print worked examples in their own instructions: a wage, a filing status, a number of allowances and the exact amount to withhold. We run 82 of those examples and checks through the same code that powers our calculators, on every build. 61 official examples from 24 states match the printed answer exactly. In 6 cases our answer differs from the printed one, and each is explained below. We also run every amount printed in the official wage-bracket tables of 6 states through the engine: 45,134 of 46,341 match exactly, and every difference is explained below. For the 8 states that print neither a worked example nor wage-bracket tables, we check the published formula instead. If any result stops matching, the site does not build, so this page cannot claim more than the code does.

How the checks work

Each check is a row in one data file: the official document, the page, the inputs printed in the example and the answer the agency prints. When we build the site, every row runs through our withholding engine with those inputs and the pay date shown. The engine's answer must equal the expected amount exactly. A single mismatch stops the build, and nothing is published until it is fixed.

The result column means:

To check a row yourself, open the document at the page listed and enter the same pay, frequency and allowances in that state's calculator with the pay date shown.

Note (Table A, single): 20 differ by $1, where the table is $1 higher than our amount.

Note (Table B, head of family): 81 differ by $1, where the table is $1 higher than our amount.

Note (Table C, married with spouse not employed): The rest differ by $1, except one run in the weekly table: in the $12,000 exemption column, rows from $410 to $510 print amounts that rise to $4 and then drop back to $0 at $510. Those six rows account for the gaps of $2 to $4.

Why it differs (Table D, married with both spouses employed): Tables D are figured with the full $4,600 married standard deduction. The same publication's instructions (section 17) and the Department's computer payroll formula both say $2,300 for a married person whose spouse also works. We follow the formula, so our amounts are $1 to $8 a paycheck higher. Figured with $4,600 instead, 13,323 of these 13,634 amounts match exactly and the rest are within $1.
