From salary to paycheck
Your salary is divided by the number of paychecks in a year: 52 if paid weekly, 26 every two weeks, 24 twice a month, 12 monthly. Each paycheck then has federal income tax withheld under the IRS 2026 percentage method, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare at 1.45%, and your state's income tax and payroll programs.
Pre-tax deductions such as a traditional 401(k), health insurance and an HSA lower the pay that income tax is figured on. Health insurance and HSA contributions through a cafeteria plan also lower Social Security and Medicare; a 401(k) does not.
