Virginia paycheck questions
How much Virginia income tax comes out of my paycheck?
Virginia annualizes your pay, subtracts a standard deduction and your VA-4 exemptions, applies 2% to 5.75% brackets, and divides by your number of paychecks. Show the math lists every step.
Why does the calculator ask about Form VA-4?
Your employer withholds Virginia tax based on the Form VA-4 you filled in, which is separate from your federal Form W-4. If you never filled one in, employers usually withhold as single with no allowances.
What will Virginia's minimum wage be in 2027?
Virginia's minimum wage rises from $12.77 to $13.75 an hour on January 1, 2027. State law then raises it to $15.00 an hour on January 1, 2028, with yearly adjustments starting January 1, 2029.
When must I get my final paycheck in Virginia?
Your final wages are due on or before the date you would have been paid if you were still employed, usually your next regular payday. This applies whether you quit, were fired or were laid off.
Does my Virginia employer have to give me a pay stub?
Yes. On each regular payday you must receive a paystub or online statement with the employer's name and address, hours worked if you are hourly, your rate of pay, gross wages, and the amount and purpose of each deduction.
How do I file a wage claim in Virginia?
Submit a Claim for Unpaid Wages to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, most quickly through the DOLI Portal. Paper forms must be signed by hand and mailed; faxed or emailed forms are not accepted.
Can I sue my Virginia employer for unpaid wages?
Yes. You can file a lawsuit within three years. If you win, you get the wages owed plus an equal amount in damages, and three times the wages if the employer knowingly failed to pay.
Why is my first paycheck in January different?
New federal withholding tables and a new Social Security cap start on January 1. Pick a 2027 pay date in the calculator to see the change.
Why did my paycheck get bigger late in the year?
Social Security stops once your pay for the year reaches $184,500. Enter your pay so far this year to see when that happens.
How much is $70,000 a year after taxes in Virginia?
About $54,864.16 a year, or $2,110.16 every two weeks, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions in 2026. That is after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Virginia income tax. Use the calculator for your own filing status and deductions.
