Iowa paycheck questions
How much Iowa income tax comes out of my paycheck?
Iowa subtracts a deduction for your IA W-4 marital status, takes 3.8% of the rest, and subtracts your IA W-4 allowance amount spread across your paychecks. Show the math lists every step.
Why does the calculator ask about Form IA W-4?
Your employer withholds Iowa tax based on the Form IA W-4 you filled in, which is separate from your federal Form W-4. If you never filled one in, employers usually withhold as single with no allowances.
When do I get my last paycheck in Iowa?
Iowa law says wages you earned must be paid no later than the next regular payday for the pay period in which you earned them. Iowa does not give a faster deadline for people who are fired or laid off.
Can an Iowa employer pay a new worker less than $7.25 an hour?
Yes, for a short time. Iowa lets employers pay a starting rate of $6.35 an hour during the first 90 calendar days of a job. After that, you must get at least the $7.25 Iowa minimum wage.
How do I file a wage claim in Iowa and what is the deadline?
Complete the Iowa Wage Claim Form and send it to the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing. It must be less than one year since the wages were due, the amount owed must be under $6,500, and the work must have been done in Iowa.
Does Iowa require overtime pay after 8 hours a day?
No. Iowa has no overtime law of its own, so the federal rule applies: non-exempt workers get time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. Iowa's labor office sends overtime complaints to the US Department of Labor.
Does my employer in Iowa have to give me a pay stub?
Yes. Every regular payday, Iowa employers must give you a statement showing the hours you worked, the wages you earned, and the deductions taken from your pay.
Why is my first paycheck in January different?
New federal withholding tables and a new Social Security cap start on January 1. Pick a 2027 pay date in the calculator to see the change.
Why did my paycheck get bigger late in the year?
Social Security stops once your pay for the year reaches $184,500. Enter your pay so far this year to see when that happens.
How much is $70,000 a year after taxes in Iowa?
About $55,949.14 a year, or $2,151.89 every two weeks, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions in 2026. That is after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Iowa income tax. Use the calculator for your own filing status and deductions.
What is the average salary in Iowa?
The median (typical) worker in Iowa earns $23.34 an hour, about $48,550 a year full time, and the mean (average) is $28.76 an hour, about $59,820 a year (BLS, May 2025). The median is lower because a few high earners pull the average up. At the median, take-home pay is about $1,533.81 every two weeks for a single filer.
