    Massachusetts paycheck questions

How much Massachusetts income tax comes out of my paycheck?

Massachusetts subtracts Social Security and Medicare (up to $2,000 a year) and your M-4 exemptions, then withholds 5%, plus a 4% surtax on very high pay. Show the math lists every step.

Why does the calculator ask about Form M-4?

Your employer withholds Massachusetts tax based on the Form M-4 you filled in, which is separate from your federal Form W-4. If you never filled one in, employers usually withhold as single with no allowances.

What is the MA PFML deduction?

Massachusetts paid family and medical leave. Employers may take up to 0.46% of wages from workers, up to the Social Security wage base; some employers pay part of it themselves.

What is the minimum wage in Massachusetts in 2026?

The Massachusetts minimum wage is $15.00 an hour and has been since January 1, 2023. Tipped workers can be paid $6.75 an hour if tips bring them to at least $15.00. No increase is currently scheduled.

When do I get my last paycheck if I'm fired in Massachusetts?

If you are fired or laid off, your employer must pay you in full on your last day of work. If you quit, you must be paid in full by the next regular payday.

How often must hourly workers be paid in Massachusetts?

Hourly employees must be paid weekly or every other week, and the pay is due within 6 or 7 days after the pay period ends, depending on how many days you worked that week.

Where do I report unpaid wages in Massachusetts?

Contact the Attorney General's Fair Labor Division. You can file a complaint online, choosing Non-Payment of Wage for most cases, or call the Fair Labor Hotline at (617) 727-3465 on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why is PFML taken out of my Massachusetts paycheck?

Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave is funded by contributions on wages, 0.88% at employers with 25 or more workers in 2026. Your employer may withhold part of it from your pay; small employers may withhold the full 0.46% rate.

Why is my first paycheck in January different?

New federal withholding tables and a new Social Security cap start on January 1. Pick a 2027 pay date in the calculator to see the change.

Why did my paycheck get bigger late in the year?

Social Security stops once your pay for the year reaches $184,500. Enter your pay so far this year to see when that happens.

How much is $70,000 a year after taxes in Massachusetts?

About $54,740.66 a year, or $2,105.41 every two weeks, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions in 2026. That is after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Massachusetts income tax and MA Paid Family & Medical Leave. Use the calculator for your own filing status and deductions.

What is the average salary in Massachusetts?

The median (typical) worker in Massachusetts earns $30.57 an hour, about $63,590 a year full time, and the mean (average) is $41.16 an hour, about $85,610 a year (BLS, May 2025). The median is lower because a few high earners pull the average up. At the median, take-home pay is about $1,933.29 every two weeks for a single filer.
