Yonkers and New York paycheck questions

I work in Yonkers but live elsewhere. Do I have to file a Yonkers return?

Usually yes. If you must file a New York State return, you file Form Y-203 with it. You can skip it only if you need no state return, your only Yonkers income was wages, and either your Yonkers wages were $3,000 or less or your one employer withheld the correct tax.

Does working from home reduce my Yonkers nonresident tax?

Only in some cases. If your assigned office is in Yonkers, normal workdays at home still count as Yonkers days unless your home office is a bona fide employer office. If your assigned office is outside Yonkers, normal workdays at home count as days outside Yonkers.

How do I get back Yonkers tax that was overwithheld?

File your New York State return, Form IT-201 or IT-203. If you are a nonresident, attach Form Y-203. The refund comes through the state return, because Form Y-203 itself cannot be used to claim a refund.

Do Yonkers residents who work outside Yonkers still pay the surcharge?

Yes. Employers withhold Yonkers tax from residents even when they work outside Yonkers. Residents report the resident income tax surcharge on Form IT-201, the New York State resident return.

How much New York income tax comes out of my paycheck?

New York State uses graduated withholding tables after subtracting a deduction and your IT-2104 allowances. New York City and Yonkers residents also pay city tax. Show the math lists every step.

Why does the calculator ask about Form IT-2104?

Your employer withholds New York tax based on the Form IT-2104 you filled in, which is separate from your federal Form W-4. If you never filled one in, employers usually withhold as single with no allowances.

Do I pay New York City tax if I work in NYC but live elsewhere?

No. New York City income tax is withheld only from NYC residents. Pick where you live in the calculator.

What is the NY disability (DBL) deduction?

Employers may take 0.5% of wages, but no more than $0.60 a week, toward New York's disability benefits.

What is the NY Paid Family Leave deduction?

A premium for New York's paid family leave program: 0.432% of gross wages, up to $411.91 a year in 2026.

Why is my first paycheck in January different?

New federal withholding tables and a new Social Security cap start on January 1. Pick a 2027 pay date in the calculator to see the change.

Why did my paycheck get bigger late in the year?

Social Security stops once your pay for the year reaches $184,500. Enter your pay so far this year to see when that happens.

How much is $70,000 a year after taxes in Yonkers?

About $53,987.70 a year, or $2,076.45 every two weeks, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions in 2026. That is after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, New York State and Yonkers tax, NY disability insurance (DBL) and NY Paid Family Leave.
