Transcript

This video shows how much tax comes out of a paycheck. Every paycheck has three federal taxes: federal income tax, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax.

For most workers, Social Security tax and Medicare tax are 7.65% of your pay. Federal income tax changes with your pay and your Form W-4.

Here is a single person paid every two weeks in Texas, which has no state income tax.

On a $40,000 salary, taxes take 14.2% of each paycheck. On $60,000, they take 16%.

On $100,000, they take 20.8%. The share increases because more of your pay is in higher tax brackets.

State taxes add more. On $60,000, take-home pay is $1,938.07 in Texas.

In California, it is $1,838.71. In New York State, it is $1,824.00.

Your number also changes with your W-4, your pre-tax deductions, and your pay schedule.

How we made this video

The script is written in ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English: short sentences, one word for one meaning, and active voice. The voice is synthetic (Piper text-to-speech). The animation is drawn with code from the calculator's own results, so the numbers on screen match the calculator. We remake a video when a rate in it changes.
